I did this piece about 2 years ago. I was playing around with a different style, using less black line and being more painterly. I always liked how this piece turned out. Just for fun I had done a mockup of it as a cover for a kids magazine.

We just bought a house, so it was natural for me to pick "home" as this weeks blog topic. Here's an illustration I made for SOS Children's Villages a while ago. I did a serious of pictures of the different parts of a Children's Village. This was titled "home".

This is the sample I did for our fall promo. It was based on my blog header which I had to translate from a horizontal to vertical layout. We girls thought it interesting how several of us (Jannie, Claire, and me) used a squirrel in our design.

I didn't have time to create a new illustration for our fall promo postcard, so I used a detail from a picture book that I am working on at the moment. The book is called Pumpkin Baby, written by Jane Yolen and will be published in 2009.

A few years ago you couldn't find a single background in my illustrations. I only drew characters on white paper or inside some kind of frame. When I decided that I wanted to work with children's books one of the first challenges for me was to start drawing backgrounds. Now that's just as natural for me as drawing the characters. Here you can see an example of one of my older drawings and one of my new drawings. Even though my new drawing is very simple with just one character it was natural to give it a background.
